Charith Abeysinghe, a former Samagi Jana Balawegaya organizer, was released from custody today after fulfilling bail requirements in a case involving alleged bribery linked to an underworld figure.

Charith Abeysinghe, a former SJB Horana organizer, has been released from remand custody after meeting bail conditions imposed by the Colombo Magistrate's Court. Abeysinghe was among three suspects initially granted bail on July 28, but unlike his co-accused, he was unable to immediately satisfy the requirements and was remanded again until today.

The three suspects—including Rakhitha Rajapakshe, son of former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, and Aruna Sri Chathuranga, former director of Airport and Aviation Services—face allegations connected to a bribery matter. According to reports, they are accused of accepting bribes from the wife of Nadun Chinthaka Wickramaratne, known as "Harak Kata." While sources agree the advance payment obtained was Rs. 120 million, they differ on the broader context: one source indicates the initial bribe demand was Rs. 500 million, later reduced to Rs. 300 million, while another simply references the Rs. 120 million figure without detailing the broader scheme.

The alleged scheme, according to available accounts, involved facilitating the removal of Harak Kata from Criminal Investigation Department custody and transferring him from Boossa High Security Prison to another facility. The Magistrate's Court set bail at Rs. 100,000 cash and two surety bonds of Rs. 1 million each per suspect. Rajapakshe and Chathuranga met these conditions promptly and were released, but Abeysinghe faced difficulties with the surety requirements, resulting in his continued detention until today's release.
