Rs. 18,000 for 4 elections in five years

The National Election Commission will spend about Rs. 18,000,000 on ink alone to fingerprint voters in one election, said Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of the People's Movement for a Free and Fair Election.

Accordingly, the total cost of ink for four elections to be held in five years, including the deployment of an officer to apply it, and the secret transportation of the ink to the polling stations, will be about Rs. 18,000,000, he said.

Now, spending money on such an act is a big crime and it is unnecessary to spend such money, said Rohana Hettiarachchi. Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of the People's Movement for Free and Fair Elections, said this while participating in a seminar held by the Anuradhapura District Committee on the theme of "Civil Organization Dialogue on Strengthening the National Reconciliation Process in Sri Lanka" at the Anuradhapura East Nuwaragam Divisional Secretariat Auditorium on the 25th. He said that as a result of the request made by civil organizations in this country, the previous governments facilitated the National Election Commission to computerize all voter lists after 2010 to prevent fraudulent voting, and that the success of that program has prevented fraudulent voting. Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri of the University of Colombo, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Reforms and Election Studies, Manjula Gajanayake, and Coordinator of the Anuradhapura District Citizens' Committee, social activist Nimal Dissanayake, also spoke at the event.
