More than 1,000 volunteers from over 60 Rotaract Clubs joined hands in one of Sri Lanka’s largest environmental movements this year, as CleanSL 2026 unfolded simultaneously in 17 locations across the island on Sunday (19). Organized by Rotaract in RID 3220 – Sri Lanka & Maldives, the flagship initiative brought together community partners including the Negombo Recycling Club, the Zero Plastic Movement, the Climate Intelligence Network, and Muve Colombo. Cleanup operations commenced at 6.30 am across Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Mannar, Matale, Kurunegala, Kandy, Badulla, Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Matara, Ratnapura, and Galle. Volunteers collected more than 1,000 kilograms of waste, including PET plastics, mixed plastics, and glass. Beyond waste collection, organizers emphasized the campaign’s innovative approach. Through partnerships and modern technology, the collected materials will be converted into fabric to produce sports jerseys for the Rotaract Champions League, which gathers over 3,000 Rotaractors for tournaments spanning four days. Officials said the initiative demonstrated the collective strength of young people working together to tackle pressing environmental challenges, fulfilling the vision of a greener, cleaner tomorrow for Sri Lanka.
