Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government has stated that a new electric railway project serving Colombo and its surrounding areas is expected to begin construction in 2025, with preliminary planning already completed.
A comprehensive electric railway initiative covering the greater Colombo region is poised to commence next year, according to Deputy Minister Ruwan Senarath. The project, which will originate from Maradana, aims to deliver faster and more contemporary public transport options to commuters throughout the area. Senarath outlined the proposal while addressing constituents in Hambantota, framing the initiative as part of the government's wider push to enhance transportation infrastructure across the country.
The railway system is designed to integrate with existing services, particularly enhancing regional connectivity. Under the proposed arrangement, passengers traveling on the Ruhunu Kumari service from Matara would be able to transfer to the electric railway at Panadura to complete their journey into Colombo. This connection is intended to improve accessibility for travelers from the southern region and reduce reliance on road-based transport alternatives.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted complementary transport developments already underway. Metro bus services have been introduced in Colombo and surrounding urban areas, providing what he characterized as improved passenger facilities. Additionally, Senarath noted that previously stalled infrastructure projects have resumed momentum, including continued work on the Central Expressway and commencement of the Kurunegala–Galagedara Expressway, valued at Rs. 112 billion. He suggested that several projects could be completed during the current year as construction activities accelerate.
Senarath framed these initiatives as responses to longstanding transportation needs, arguing that modern infrastructure comparable to international standards is essential for the country's development. The combined effect of the electric railway, bus services, and expressway projects represents the government's multifaceted approach to addressing urban mobility and regional connectivity challenges.
