The Colombo Marathon 2026 has been officially validated by World Athletics and registered as a World Rankings Competition, marking a significant milestone for Sri Lankan athletics and positioning the country as a destination for international road running events.
The Colombo Marathon 2026 has achieved international competitive status after receiving validation from World Athletics, with the event now registered on the World Athletics Global Calendar as a World Rankings Competition. This designation means that athlete performances at the event will be eligible to contribute to official World Athletics World Rankings, subject to applicable requirements.
According to Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, the recognition represents a significant milestone for Sri Lankan athletics, enabling local athletes to compete on home soil at a globally recognised event while establishing Colombo's presence on the international road-running map. The achievement is expected to strengthen the marathon's appeal to international participants and support broader efforts to develop Colombo as a sports tourism destination.
Scheduled for September 13 at Baladaksha Mawatha with a 6 am start time, the event anticipates more than 4,000 participants across four categories: the Full Marathon covering 42 kilometres, Half Marathon at 21 kilometres, a 10-kilometre road race, and a 5-kilometre fun run. Preparations involve extensive coordination between international technical experts and Sri Lankan officials to ensure the course and race arrangements meet World Athletics standards.
The organising structure brings together more than 100 qualified officials from Sri Lanka Athletics, alongside support from the Department of Sports Development and the Institute of Sports Medicine. Technical preparations encompass course measurement, officiating protocols, athlete safety measures, and medical readiness. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in partnership with the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, with registration closing on September 1, 2026.
