The Port of Colombo has climbed six places in global container port rankings to reach 20th position, handling 4.44 million TEUs in the first half of 2026 and representing one of the most significant upward movements among major international ports.

The Port of Colombo has achieved a notable advancement in global maritime standings, moving from 26th place at the end of 2025 to 20th position in the first half of 2026, according to Alphaliner's latest container throughput rankings. The port processed 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during this period, reflecting an 11.9 percent year-on-year increase compared to 3.97 million TEUs handled in the corresponding period of 2025. This performance follows a record year in 2025, when Colombo handled approximately 8.3 million TEUs.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority attributes the growth to Colombo's strengthening role as a major Indian Ocean transshipment hub, with container traffic increasingly connecting East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. According to Alphaliner, Colombo's rise stands out against a backdrop of significant disruptions to global shipping patterns, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and shifting trade flows. While Chinese ports continue to dominate the top rankings—with Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, and Singapore leading globally—other major regional ports have experienced substantial declines. Dubai's Jebel Ali Port, for instance, fell sharply from 10th place to 32nd place during the same period, while Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Port also contracted significantly.

The Ports Authority has outlined ambitious plans for future development, citing potential investments of up to US$2 billion over the next one to three years for container handling and logistics infrastructure through expansion projects and public-private partnerships. Officials emphasize that continued infrastructure development must accompany productivity improvements and technological advancement to maintain Colombo's competitive position as a reliable maritime gateway serving regional and international shipping interests.
