Commercial Bank of Ceylon has showcased an innovative deployment of Open Digital Architecture at an international technology forum in Copenhagen, marking the first successful application of telecom-based systems in the fintech sector.
Commercial Bank of Ceylon presented its latest technological advancement at TM Forum's DTW Ignite 2026 conference in Copenhagen, where it demonstrated a groundbreaking implementation of Open Digital Architecture (ODA) in banking. The initiative, developed in partnership with Axonect (formerly Axiata Digital Labs), represents the first successful deployment of ODA principles in the financial technology sector, positioning the Sri Lankan institution as an early adopter of architectural frameworks traditionally associated with telecommunications.
The deployment enables Commercial Bank to modernise its technology infrastructure while preserving essential governance standards, data security, and regulatory compliance requirements. According to the Bank's Chief Information Officer Sumudu Gunawardhana, the ODA-aligned platform allows the institution to operate with the flexibility and scalability of cloud environments without compromising control over critical financial systems. The implementation has already yielded measurable operational benefits, including improved efficiency and reduced costs, alongside enabling rapid digital service deployments such as Google Pay integration and real-time PayPal remittance clearing.
The architecture supports an extensive network of microservices and application programming interfaces (APIs), facilitating seamless service delivery across multiple markets. Axonect's CEO Anthony Rodrigo noted that ODA principles extend beyond telecommunications to offer enterprise-wide transformation potential, particularly as artificial intelligence and cloud computing become increasingly central to organisational development. TM Forum's Executive Vice President Willie Stegmann highlighted that the collaboration demonstrates how open frameworks can drive innovation, simplify system integration, and support scalable AI adoption across industries beyond telecom.
Commercial Bank has indicated this milestone initiates the next phase of its digital evolution toward what it terms "agentic banking"—an AI-driven operating model supported by advanced software delivery systems and robust data governance. The Bank is the largest private sector lender in Sri Lanka and operates over 270 branches domestically, alongside international operations across Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar, and the Dubai International Financial Centre.
