Sri Lanka is preparing to launch an expanded week-long kite festival in Colombo featuring international flyers from 30 countries alongside over 1,500 local participants, aimed at boosting tourism and cultural exchange.
The Derana Digital Colombo International Kite Festival 2026 will transform into a comprehensive cultural event spanning multiple days, drawing kite enthusiasts and cultural participants from across the globe. The festival has expanded by 30 percent in international participation compared to previous years, according to organizers working alongside the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka Police, and the Colombo Municipal Council.
The week's schedule includes preparatory workshops that have already engaged over 630 children aged 8 to 15 in kite-building and flying instruction led by expert flyers from Australia, France, and China. The main festivities begin with a welcome ceremony for international delegates on Thursday, followed by a press conference on Friday. Saturday will feature a vintage vehicle parade of approximately 200 classic cars accompanied by international kite flyers traveling from Galle Face Green through major city corridors to Port City, where a specialized kite flying event will be held for diplomats and media representatives.
The festival reaches its climax on Sunday with daytime flying activities at Galle Face Green beginning at 1:00 PM, followed by Sri Lanka's inaugural night kite festival showcasing illuminated kites from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. A grand musical concert featuring local artists will accompany the festivities, supported by the Derana Colombo Food Festival. Security measures include deployment of 1,000 police personnel, with 300 dedicated to traffic management and 200 working in plainclothes capacities.
Organizers view the event as an opportunity to demonstrate Sri Lanka's openness to international visitors while showcasing local heritage. The festival incorporates a cultural theme centered on the Kandy Esala Perahera, with international participants scheduled to visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple.
