The families of 10 prison officers killed during recent violence at Negombo Prison have each received Rs. 2 million in compensation through the National Insurance Trust Fund's Agrahara Insurance Scheme.
Compensation payments totalling Rs. 2 million per deceased officer were distributed on Wednesday to relatives of prison staff who died in the recent violence at Negombo Prison. The payments were presented at the Prison Headquarters to families of the 10 officers attached to the Prison Emergency Response Unit who lost their lives during the clashes.
According to the National Insurance Trust Fund (NITF), the decision to disburse compensation was made to support the families during the unexpected crisis. NITF Chief Executive Officer Yushan Tharanga noted that payments were processed promptly under the Agrahara Insurance Scheme without awaiting complete documentation, acknowledging the urgent circumstances faced by the bereaved families.
Beyond the direct compensation, the Department of Prisons indicated it would implement additional relief measures for the families of the deceased officers. Acting Commissioner General of Prisons Prasad Hemantha Kumara, who attended the compensation ceremony, confirmed these broader support initiatives were being developed to assist those affected by the prison outbreak.
