Authorities are investigating a complaint regarding nearly 20,000 Tamil-language Grade One textbooks valued at approximately Rs. 800,000 that were not delivered to distribution centers in the Eastern Province as scheduled.
A formal complaint has been registered with the Thalangama Police concerning a consignment of educational materials that failed to reach its intended destinations. The shipment, comprising 19,892 Tamil Grade One textbooks and activity books meant for the third term, was issued by the Educational Publications Department under the Ministry of Education.
According to the complaint filed by a senior female officer of the department on August 12, the books were authorized for transport on May 4 to a contracted company responsible for delivery. Despite this approval, the materials were never distributed to the 12 designated distribution centers across the Eastern Province, according to the allegation.
The incident has prompted police to initiate investigative procedures to determine what occurred to the textbooks during the transport and distribution process. The estimated value of the undelivered stock stands at approximately Rs. 800,000. At present, the Thalangama Police have confirmed that inquiries into the matter remain ongoing, though specific details regarding the cause of the failure to deliver have not yet been disclosed.
The case highlights concerns about oversight mechanisms within the educational supply chain and the handling of state resources allocated for educational purposes.
