A police constable has been arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau following an investigation into Facebook posts allegedly insulting to the President and government.
A constable serving at the office of the Assistant Senior Superintendent of Police in Embilipitiya has been taken into custody by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau. The arrest follows an investigation launched after a formal complaint was lodged with the Inspector General of Police regarding the officer's social media activity.
According to police statements, the constable is accused of publishing Facebook posts deemed insulting toward the President and the government. Authorities also allege that the officer engaged with similar content on the platform. The investigation and subsequent arrest were conducted by the CCIB based on the complaint received.
Police records indicate that the arrested constable had previously served in a security capacity for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa during an earlier period of service. Following the arrest, authorities have indicated that legal proceedings will be initiated against the suspect under relevant provisions of the Penal Code. The charges relate to the alleged social media posts and engagement with content considered derogatory toward state leadership.
