Deputy Minister of Transport inaugurated construction on a Rs. 4,998 million road project designed to alleviate traffic congestion in Warakapola town, with completion targeted for August 2028.
Construction work on the Warakapola Alternative Road Project commenced on Monday with the official inauguration by Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena. The initiative represents a significant investment of Rs. 4,998 million aimed at addressing persistent traffic problems in the Warakapola area.
The project encompasses a 2.32-kilometre stretch of road designed with modern infrastructure specifications. The carriageway will feature two lanes of 3.5 metres each, supported by a 1.5-metre hard shoulder and 2.4-metre soft shoulder. The construction will include three viaducts spanning a combined 476.5 metres, two bridges, eight culverts, and approximately 1,035 metres of retaining walls to manage the terrain.
According to the Deputy Minister, the alternative route is expected to substantially reduce vehicular congestion in Warakapola town while improving safety and transport efficiency for both commuters and commercial traffic. The project is scheduled for completion by August 21, 2028, pending progress according to timeline.
