The Cabinet has approved a proposal to revise the total cost estimate and extend the completion deadline for the four-storey building under construction at the Kandy National Hospital. The project, originally launched in 2021 with funding from the SAARC Development Fund during the COVID-19 pandemic, was initially designed as a four-storey pre-fabricated building with 50 negative-pressure isolation rooms at an estimated cost of US$1.2 million. The project scope was later revised, with the number of isolation rooms reduced from 50 to 23 to accommodate a 25-bed male ward and a 20-bed female ward, increasing the building’s total capacity from 50 to 68 beds. Cabinet approved revising the total project cost to Rs. 1,094.22 million and extending the completion deadline until Dec. 31, 2027. Construction work worth Rs. 282.24 million has already been completed. (Newswire)
