A rapidly intensifying El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean is raising concerns about Sri Lanka's weather patterns and water availability, while drought conditions have already affected tens of thousands across the country.

Sri Lanka confronts mounting climate pressures as a strengthening El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean threatens to reshape weather patterns across the island. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, central Pacific temperatures have climbed to 2.37 degrees Celsius above average, placing the current phenomenon within striking distance of the powerful 2016 El Niño event. Forecasts suggest temperatures could rise further to 3 degrees Celsius within the coming month, potentially making this the strongest El Niño since records began in 1900, with projections indicating possible peaks of 3.6 degrees Celsius by November.

Complicating forecasts for Sri Lanka is unexpected behaviour from the Indian Ocean, where temperatures are declining rather than rising as earlier models predicted. The Indian Ocean Dipole index currently sits at 0.17 in neutral territory, which significantly undermines prior expectations for improved rainfall during November and December. This development creates additional uncertainty for agricultural planning, as rainfall projections were partly based on assumptions of warmer Indian Ocean conditions supporting monsoon patterns.

The impact of current dry conditions is already evident across most of Sri Lanka, with the exception of the southwestern region. The Disaster Management Centre reports that 81,865 people from 25,628 families have been affected by drought. Water authorities are supplying drinking water to over 72,000 people across 20 divisional areas, while reservoir levels remain stressed at approximately 35 percent capacity for irrigation department reservoirs and 55 percent for the Mahaweli system. In response, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake convened discussions with agriculture and irrigation officials to explore managing existing water resources and planning cultivation strategies.

Agricultural authorities are recommending farmers complete paddy cultivation by October 15, betting on anticipated November rainfall. Officials are also encouraging cultivation of short-duration paddy varieties due to concerns about potential water shortages during the 2027 dry season. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's highest-ever recorded temperature of 40.1 degrees Celsius, set in 1983, faces potential challenges as recent measurements in Pottuvil reached 39.9 degrees Celsius. Climate experts emphasize that Sri Lanka relies on international forecasting institutions rather than independent El Niño monitoring, leaving the country dependent on external data as it navigates the coming months of climatic uncertainty.
