The Dambulla Magistrate’s Court has imposed fines totaling Rs. 200,000 on a wholesale trader and a retail shop after they pleaded guilty to selling Keeri Samba rice above the government-approved Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The cases were filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority’s (CAA) Matale District Office following raids at two business establishments in Dambulla. One case involved a wholesale business at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre, where investigators found imported Keeri Samba rice, with a gazetted maximum retail price of Rs. 255 per kilogram, being sold at Rs. 261 per kilogram. The second case involved a retail shop in Dambulla, where locally produced Keeri Samba rice with a maximum retail price of Rs. 260 per kilogram was being sold at Rs. 360 per kilogram. The court imposed fines of Rs. 100,000 on each establishment after the defendants admitted to the offences. (Newswire)
