The Consumer Affairs Authority has secured a court conviction against a Kurunegala manufacturer for producing and selling safety helmets with fraudulent Sri Lanka Standards certification marks.

A manufacturing facility in the Heraliyawala Industrial Estate in Kurunegala has been found guilty of producing safety helmets with false Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification marks. The Consumer Affairs Authority conducted a raid at the premises on July 27, 2026, during which officials discovered and confiscated 57 helmets bearing the counterfeit certification.

Following the raid, the CAA filed charges with the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court on July 31, 2026. The defendant entered a guilty plea during proceedings, leading to swift legal action. The court imposed a financial penalty of Rs. 80,000 against the offending company and ordered that all seized helmets be destroyed.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about counterfeit product certifications in Sri Lanka's manufacturing sector. The Consumer Affairs Authority emphasizes that the distribution of substandard items or goods bearing false safety marks poses significant risks to public welfare. In response, the authority has urged members of the public to report suspected violations involving counterfeit certifications, substandard products, or misleading consumer goods through the dedicated hotline 1977.
