The Colombo District Court has rejected a request to compel cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to provide a DNA sample in a paternity dispute brought by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, citing insufficient grounds for the order.
The Colombo District Court has declined to issue an order compelling Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to submit to a DNA test as part of an ongoing paternity case. The application for compulsory testing was dismissed after the court determined that adequate justification had not been presented to warrant such an order.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who seeks a court declaration that Karunaratne is the biological father of her child. According to court documents, Sewwandi alleges that she and Karunaratne maintained a relationship beginning around 2023, which included an intimate component. She further claims that Karunaratne declined to acknowledge paternity once she informed him of her pregnancy.
In addition to the paternity declaration, Sewwandi has requested that the court direct the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate listing Karunaratne as the child's father. Karunaratne has previously rejected the paternity allegations and has resisted undergoing DNA testing. The court has scheduled the main case for further proceedings on October 9.
