A majority of Sri Lankans are satisfied with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s performance, while nearly two-thirds support abolishing the Executive Presidency, according to the latest Confidence in Democratic Governance Index released by the Centre for Policy Alternatives’ (CPA) Social Indicator. The survey found that 75.5% of respondents were satisfied with the President’s performance, compared to 29.4% satisfaction for Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. The poll also found that 64.1% of respondents support abolishing the Executive Presidency. However, only 23.6% said the process should begin immediately, while 40.5% supported abolition but did not consider it an immediate priority. Meanwhile, 23% opposed the move. On the economy, 51.4% of respondents said their household economic situation had worsened compared to a year ago, while only 18.2% said it had improved. Public opinion on the government’s handling of the cost of living was almost evenly split, with 45.3% satisfied and 44% dissatisfied. The survey also found that 62.8% were satisfied with the National People’s Power (NPP) government’s capacity to deliver efficient governance, while 68.6% expressed satisfaction with the government’s response to relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts following Cyclone Ditwah. In addition, 51.6% said they were satisfied with the government’s progress in investigating the Easter Sunday attacks. The nationwide survey was conducted between May 23 and June 18, 2026, among 1,240 respondents across all 25 districts. (Newswire)
