A heartfelt social media campaign initiated by musician Dayan Witharana to help a terminally ill patient reconnect with his former partner living in Australia has concluded with the patient's death at Maharagama Apeksha Hospital without the reunion taking place.
Gayan Munasinghe, whose emotional story captured the attention of thousands online, passed away at Maharagama Apeksha Hospital's Shantha Sewana ward without fulfilling his final wish to see his former lover, according to musician Dayan Witharana. The appeal, which originated from a performance at the hospital ward on July 27, resonated deeply with social media users and accumulated over a million views and shares across Facebook.
The story emerged when Witharana, alongside singers Sewwandi Ranatunga and Priyanath Ratnayake, performed at Munasinghe's bedside. Despite his deteriorating health, the patient requested specific songs, including Niranjala Sarojini's "Oba Dekaganimen" and Witharana's "Sittham Karamin." Following the performance, Munasinghe shared that he had been separated from his beloved for approximately two decades, with his former partner now living overseas. He expressed that reuniting with her would represent his greatest source of happiness.
Witharana and Ranatunga shared footage of the encounter on social media, urging the public to assist in locating and reconnecting the patient with his estranged partner. The campaign generated significant momentum, yet despite the widespread response and public support, the reunion never materialized. In a statement reflecting on the outcome, Witharana expressed sorrow that Munasinghe could not even speak with his former partner by telephone before his death, and offered prayers for their meeting in another life.
