The newly constituted National Delimitation Commission, led by former Elections Commissioner Saman Sri Ratnayake, has outlined plans to extend its work beyond electoral redistricting to encompass boundary demarcation for various service-providing institutions across Sri Lanka.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed fresh members to the National Delimitation Commission, with Saman Sri Ratnayake, a former Commissioner General of Elections, taking the helm. The Commission also includes Dr. K. Thavalingam and Rohana Pushpakumara, former Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Upon assuming office, Ratnayake stressed the significance of delimitation within democratic systems, characterizing it as a technical matter essential to representative governance. He explained that boundary determination forms the foundation for electoral processes, allowing voters to elect representatives from defined constituencies.
Beyond traditional electoral functions, Ratnayake indicated the Commission intends to provide broader support for delimitation activities across multiple government institutions and service-delivery organizations. He described this expanded scope as a key objective, positioning the body as a central authority for boundary-related matters throughout the country's administrative structure.
Ratnayake appealed to relevant institutions to cooperate with the Commission in fulfilling this widened mandate. The statement reflects an ambition to establish the Commission as a coordinating body for demarcation work that extends considerably beyond the electoral sphere.
