Sri Lanka's dengue epidemic has reached 84,091 confirmed cases with 61 deaths recorded this year, with July emerging as the most severe month and the Western Province accounting for more than half of all infections.
The dengue outbreak across Sri Lanka has escalated to over 84,000 cases as of late July, according to figures released by the National Dengue Control Unit. The death toll from the disease stands at 61 for the year, with health authorities emphasizing that no additional fatalities were recorded on July 29 itself. The case fatality rate remains relatively low at 0.07 percent, though the absolute numbers continue to climb significantly.
July has proven to be the worst month of the epidemic so far, with 28,717 infections recorded during the month alone. This marks a sharp increase compared to previous months, which saw June register 21,533 cases and earlier months showing lower but steady transmission rates. Health officials report an average of 2,391 new cases being identified daily during the most recent reporting week.
Geographically, the outbreak remains heavily concentrated in specific regions. The Gampaha District has reported the highest number of cases at 17,850, followed closely by Colombo with 16,716 confirmed patients. The Western Province as a whole accounts for approximately 53 percent of all national cases at 44,552 infections. However, there is a discrepancy between sources regarding Southern Province figures, with reports citing either 18,127 or 12,656 cases. Other significantly affected provinces include the Central and Sabaragamuwa regions.
Authorities have identified 175 high-risk Medical Officer of Health areas currently experiencing active transmission. Health officials have urged communities to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites and remain vigilant for dengue symptoms as containment efforts continue across the island.
