Colombo (News 1st)The National System Operator Company says it plans to reduce diesel-based power generation to 0.5% of total electricity generation within the next two years.It's Chairman, Dr. Pradeep Perera, said that electricity generation using furnace oil will also be reduced to 5%.He stated that the plan is expected to save around Rs. 30 billion in electricity generation costs, allowing the benefit to be passed on to the public.He mentioned that under this program, a battery system with a capacity of 750 megawatts is planned to be established in the country within the next two years to store solar-generated electricity.He also said that 150 megawatts of this battery capacity have already been imported to the island.Dr. Pradeep Perera added that tenders have been called to import another 250 megawatts of battery capacity into the country.
