Researchers at the University of Vienna have discovered that dogs can distinguish between different emotions displayed on human faces, marking what they describe as the first scientific evidence of this ability.
A groundbreaking study from the University of Vienna has provided the first documented evidence that dogs possess the ability to recognize distinct human emotions by analyzing facial expressions. Using machine learning to examine brain scans of 12 dogs while they viewed images of faces showing various emotional states, researchers identified specific neural patterns associated with emotional recognition.
The study, published in the journal iScience on Monday, found that certain brain regions—specifically the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus, which are linked to higher cognitive functions and reward processing—were activated exclusively when dogs viewed happy faces. In contrast, images depicting anger, fear, and sadness did not trigger activity in these same regions. However, analysis of broader brain activity patterns revealed that dogs could differentiate between the negative emotions, distinguishing fear from anger and sadness for the first time in scientific research.
Senior researcher Laura Cuaya emphasized that dogs likely developed this emotional recognition capacity through their long evolutionary relationship with humans. "Dogs have evolved with us to understand our expressions and cooperate with us, and recognizing that can change how we communicate with and care for them," Cuaya stated. The research team noted that all study participants were pets from supportive home environments and cautioned that dogs in different circumstances may respond to human emotional cues in varying ways.
Future research will focus on how dogs integrate multiple sensory inputs—including body language, vocal tone, and scent—when interpreting human emotions, as well as comparative analysis of how canine and human brains process the same emotional signals.
