The Department of Meteorology forecasts persistent wet and windy conditions across southwestern regions of Sri Lanka on August 1st due to the active Southwest monsoon.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather alert for August 1st, warning of continued rainy and windy conditions affecting the southwestern portions of the island as the Southwest monsoon remains active.
Showers are expected to occur periodically throughout the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. The meteorological department indicates that some locations may experience heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres. Scattered showers are also possible in the Matale, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota districts, though most other areas of the island are anticipated to remain dry.
Meanwhile, significant wind activity is forecast across much of the country. Wind speeds reaching between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour are expected to occur intermittently over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Northern, North-central, Central, and North-western provinces. The Monaragala and Trincomalee districts are also likely to experience these strong wind conditions.
