Election Commission officials have been called before a special parliamentary committee examining the conduct of Provincial Council elections, with further discussions on electoral procedures scheduled for August 20th.

Election Commission Commissioner General Rasika Peiris confirmed that officials will appear before a special parliamentary committee on August 20th to continue discussions regarding Provincial Council elections. The meeting will focus on procedural matters related to how these elections should be conducted going forward.

The special committee, chaired by Minister Vijitha Herath, was recently established to evaluate which electoral system should be employed for Provincial Council elections and to provide recommendations to Parliament. This marks the second time the Election Commission has been summoned to appear before the committee as part of its broader consultation process.

To date, the committee has engaged with multiple stakeholders in its examination of the electoral framework. These consultations have included meetings with the Attorney General's Department and other political parties, in addition to the Election Commission. The committee's work is part of a wider effort to determine the most appropriate electoral methodology for future Provincial Council elections in Sri Lanka.
