Colombo (News 1st) The Cabinet has approved the appointment of a special Cabinet sub-committee and a committee of officials to take action on the possible impacts of the 'El Nino' climate impacts. The Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the President. A Cabinet sub-committee consisting of Minister of Environment Dhammika Pattabendi, Minister of Agriculture K.T. Lal Kantha, Minister of Plantations Samantha Widyaratne, Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilaka, and Minister of Commerce Wasantha Samarasinghe has been appointed to prepare short-term, medium-term and long-term plans to manage the water, electricity and food crises that may arise due to the 'El Nino' situation. A committee of officials has also been appointed to provide support to the Cabinet sub-committee. Chief of Staff to the President Prabhat Chandrakirthi has been named as the chairman of the said committee. Officials including secretaries of ministries including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Plantations and Ministry of Energy have been named as members of this committee.
