• Criminals will be brought to justice • The current government is implementing the public's expectation that corrupt and fraudsters should be punished • In line with the people's mandate, we will transform this country into a civilized country. • The Prevention of Terrorism Act will be repealed this year. • The country has embarked on a long-term sustainable journey. The President emphasized that it is the public's expectation to punish those who loot public property and engage in corruption and fraud, and that the current government is a government that will fulfill that public expectation. He pointed out that no crime will be allowed to disappear over time, and the responsibility of bringing criminals to justice will be fulfilled. The President made this statement while participating in the House adjournment debate on drug eradication yesterday (25) morning. The President pointed out that the mandate given to the current government by the people is to build a civilized country, and said that there will be no personal vendettas against anyone, and that the government has accepted the responsibility of making everyone from the President to the grassroots political leadership, and from the Presidential Secretary to the grassroots government officials, partners in this civilized country. Similarly, the President added that the government has now taken several strong steps to suppress the drug trade and the armed groups associated with it, and that today the country is on a long-term sustainable journey. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s full speech in Parliament: Drugs and organized crime have been growing for a long time and have been terrorizing society, and drugs have had a huge impact on society. It is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to the complete eradication of this drug and to suppress organized crime. In particular, there is a vast network of connections behind the emergence and development of these drugs and organized crime. To suppress these drugs and organized crimes, we must also pay attention to the entire sector related to them. This can only be eradicated by suppressing those involved in organized crime, drug dealers, state institutions and political power, and by suppressing all the corruption that has spread within the government, the state-oriented organizations and politics that have operated within the government. Only drug raids and raids to arrest underworld figures are not enough. These have developed due to the interventions I mentioned earlier. We have decided to eradicate all of these. There are parties who play a major role in this work. Unfortunately, they have become the main culprits of the opposition party. This fraud, organized crimes, drug dealers, crimes committed within the state mechanism, and politics must be suppressed. The necessary laws have been enacted to suppress this. There are also state institutions for this. It is useless to have institutions. We need a state mechanism that can give direct leadership to those institutions and defeat them. But unfortunately, the people who are dedicated to this work have become the main enemies and targets of the opposition today. The Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Deputy Inspector General of Police Sani Abeysekara, plays a major role in this work. He is the enemy of the opposition. The Director General of the Corruption Eradication Department, Ranga Dissanayake, plays a major role in this. He is also the enemy of the opposition. The Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Ravi Seneviratne, plays a major role in this work. He is also the enemy of the opposition. Similarly, Minister Ananda Wijepala is playing a major role. He is also seen as an enemy by the opposition. The Attorney General's Department, Dileepa Peiris, plays a major role in this work. He is also the enemy of the opposition. The court is playing a major role in this. The court has also become the enemy of the opposition today. Why is that? The opposition has not been able to digest the efforts made to establish justice, fairness and civilization. The opposition does not like justice, fairness, democracy, and good governance. This is the truth. Isn't it necessary to expose those who have committed crimes with state patronage from within the government? Is it betrayal or treason? No. It is aimed at creating a civilized country. We must make our country a civilized country. From the President to the political leadership at the grassroots level, from the Presidential Secretary to the grassroots government officials, everyone should be made partners in a civilized country. But our country was an uncivilized country. We have respect and admiration for our army and intelligence services. But if our army and intelligence services are working for the security of the country and the security of the people, we will stand up for them somewhere. We have a duty to protect and honor our military and intelligence services wherever they are operating for the sake of the country’s existence, the security of the public, and the security of the country, whether at the national or international level. We will do that. But if some groups in our military and intelligence services have acted for the needs of the government, for the power of a family or for the power of a political party, our government will not stand back and punish them accordingly. This must be done for the honor of our military, to build a civilized country, and for the security of our people. Haven’t such incidents happened in our country? How was Lasantha Wickramatunga assassinated? It was not a conflict between ordinary civilians. An anti-government journalist is assassinated. Should the fact that the intelligence services were used for this be hidden, according to reports? No. Keith Noyer is abducted and attacked. It is reported that he was detained in a military safe house. Upali Tennakoon is being attacked. Potala Jayantha is being attacked. Namal is being attacked. These are not civil conflicts. These are crimes committed by a government, using its power for the sake of a family and the power of its political camp. So is the assassination of Thajudeen. So is the Easter Sunday attack. Sirasa Institute is being set on fire. The last offices are being set on fire. Bombs are being thrown at Siyatha Institute. There is such a history. Behind all this were the operatives of a very small state machine. Shouldn’t this be revealed to the country? Wasn’t there a “white van” scare in the country? Weren’t people who came in white vans without number plates and protested against the demolition of their houses in the garden abducted? These are not ordinary civil conflicts. So what are these? These are barbaric massacres and barbaric crimes committed by a government, a very small group of forces that should have been protecting the country, the people, and the existence of the government, for their own political needs. We are certainly a government that is obliged to uphold the law against those barbaric massacres and barbaric crimes. Why? We have to do this for the justice of those victims. We have to do this for the honor of the army. Similarly, we have to do this for the civilized nature of the government. I don't know if anyone here can be against this. Can you be against this? No, you can't be against this. Only the criminals can oppose this. Only those who benefited from those crimes. Only those who retained power through those crimes can oppose this. Only those who waited to gain power through those crimes. No other ordinary citizen, no citizen who has any respect for democracy, human rights and the humanity of humans can be against these investigations. Shani Abeysekera, Dileepa Peiris, as well as the Inspector General of Police, as well as the court, Ranga Dissanayake are being severely criticized. For what? Tell me what crime they committed. What crime they committed was to expose the crimes committed against the people of this country in front of the public and investigate them. They are not guilty of that. So if any person is thinking, if anyone thinks that they can stop this effort by threatening these officials individually, intimidating them individually, we assure them that we will not allow this effort to be stopped in any way. We will stand up for them. The public of this country must stand up for them. Are you standing up for these criminals? We must stand up for the public of this country. I call on everyone for that. Similarly, there was a politics tied to this. Criminals were paid to prevent killing. If someone is arrested, they should be brought to court according to the proper procedure. But instead of bringing them to court, they were paid to kill. They were paid to save them from death. It doesn’t matter which party they belong to. You will find out what they are. They were paid not to kill. They were paid to protect them from death. They were paid to remove them from the PTA. This is how the political system is connected to these. Some people thought that these things would be forgotten with time. We will not allow these things to be forgotten with time. It is the responsibility of our government to bring the criminals to justice in a proper manner. We will investigate, arrest them, file cases through the Attorney General’s Department and get them punished through the court system. But there was a history of killing those who were arrested. There was a history of taking ransom to save them from killing. What are the secrets of the group that was arrested this morning? I want to know if you will continue to have such people in your party. Similarly, a political leader has spoken to a drug dealer in prison ninety-two times. He has called him 54 times. He has received other calls from him. Do you still have such people in your party? I do not know if you have at least done a disciplinary check within the party. This political power, this drug, this drug trafficking, this organized crime has been supported to grow. We will completely end the protection that political power provides for this. No one should call this political revenge. Why have we been given power? There was a purpose in the massive mandate given to us. That purpose is to make our government civilized. This parliament should be civilized. It should listen, it should present things. Civilized attitude is needed here. Why is there no civility? You need direct leadership. MPs should act according to your orders. But this Parliament has been turned into an indecent state. They are turning the country's politics into an indecent state. We have been given the responsibility of bringing this country back to the path of civilization. We are engaged in the struggle to bring civilization back to this Parliament, within the government institutions and within all these. Corruption has been discussed in our election platforms for a long time. We have revealed how the corrupt money was taken out. Generally, money was paid through the DT system but the goods did not arrive. From 2023 till now, up to a billion dollars have been paid through DT. But the goods did not arrive. A billion dollars is about 300 billion rupees. An ordinary person cannot carry 300 billion rupees in cash. An ordinary businessman cannot smuggle 300 billion out of the country. But they have smuggled. There is drug money, there is money earned through corruption, there is wealth earned through crimes. Investigations have been initiated in this regard. More than a billion dollars have been sent, but the goods have not arrived in Sri Lanka. These incidents have been happening for close to two years, and we have now taken measures to prevent it. There are connections between some banks in this. We have identified some bank branches. Money has been smuggled out of the country. We have arrested some people. Investigations are underway. It is the wealth earned through corruption that has gone out through dollars. What may have been earned in Sri Lanka in rupees, but has been smuggled out of the country in dollars. Therefore, those corruptions have contributed to the collapse of the economy and social structure of this country. Shouldn't investigations be conducted against them? We do not need to take personal revenge or settle personal grudges against anyone. It has been about two years since we came to power. If it was revenge, it should have been taken as soon as it came to power. This is not revenge. This Parliament has enacted powerful laws to eradicate corruption and bribery. It takes time to implement them. Institutions were established to investigate it. Some investigative agencies had collapsed. We have strengthened those investigative agencies. We have asked the Attorney General's Department to recruit new officers. A large number of cases are pending in the courts. We have created seven new high courts. Our expectation is to speed up this process and punish them properly through the courts. Can it be called revenge? It is a formal, legal process in which we go after the corrupt in this country and bring the corrupt before the courts. The wealth earned through corruption, the underworld, is tied to these drug dealers. Each of these is not separate. All the money, whether it is drug money, money of criminals, money earned through corruption, has gone out through the DD. Therefore, the main responsibility for the steps we are taking to eradicate this corruption is being fulfilled by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Similarly, the work is being carried out by the FCID and the Attorney General's Department. The opposition is going after the famous officials in those institutions who intervene for that and making harsh criticisms. They are giving the message that let the looting happen, do not punish the person who loots. There was an expectation that those who looted the public's wealth would be punished. There was no party difference in that. Was there a party difference in punishing the person who looted the public's property? Was there a difference between the North and the South? That is the expectation of the public. But they vote for governments based on that expectation, but the government engages in the same theft in a short period of time. We will not do that. This government has become, and is changing, a government that gives life to the expectations of the public of this country to bring corruption and fraud to justice.
