Ex-Mayor Athaullah Ahamed Saki has been remanded until September 1 following allegations of sexual assault against a municipal employee dating back to 2021.
Former Akkaraipattu Mayor Athaullah Ahamed Saki has been remanded in custody until September 1 after appearing before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate's Court. The 43-year-old faces investigation into allegations that a female employee of the Akkaraipattu Municipal Council was sexually assaulted inside his office.
According to police statements, the incident allegedly occurred in 2021, though it only came to authorities' attention in July when the 32-year-old woman was hospitalised following a suicide attempt. During questioning, the woman allegedly told investigators that she was raped by the suspect and subsequently subjected to multiple additional sexual assaults over an extended period.
Police records indicate that the woman reported being threatened and intimidated following the alleged incidents. The investigation was triggered by her hospitalisation, which prompted her to come forward with the complaint.
Saki is the son of former minister A.L.M. Athaullah. The magistrate's remand order will allow authorities to continue their investigation into the allegations during the coming weeks.
