The final shipment of turbines for the 50 MW HayWind Wind Power Plant under construction in Mannar has arrived at the Port of Trincomalee, the Ministry of Energy announced. The first batch of turbines reached Sri Lanka a few weeks ago, with installation already underway at the project site. The ministry said the project has secured a power purchase agreement at US$0.0465 (around Rs. 14.37) per unit, the lowest tariff recorded in Sri Lanka for electricity generated from wind power. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to save the country about Rs. 4.7 billion in foreign exchange annually by reducing fossil fuel imports while cutting carbon emissions by around 186,300 metric tonnes each year. The project is expected to support Sri Lanka’s target of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and contribute towards the country’s net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050. Construction of the project began in January this year, and the wind power plant is scheduled to be completed by March 2027, adding 50 MW of electricity to the national grid. The turbines will be installed and maintained by Hayleys Fentons PLC, while the National System Operator (NSO) under the Ministry of Energy will oversee system control and management. (Newswire)
