The Cabinet of Ministers has given approval to proceed with amending the Fishermen's Pension and Social Security Benefit Scheme Act No. 23 of 1990, according to a resolution submitted by the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources.
Following the Cabinet's decision, the Legal Draftsman has been directed to prepare a draft bill that will modify the existing legislation. The move signals the government's intention to update the regulatory framework governing pension and social security provisions for fishermen in Sri Lanka.
The 1990 Act has been the primary legislation defining social security benefits and pension entitlements for the fishing community. The proposed amendments suggest that authorities have identified areas requiring revision to better serve beneficiaries or reflect current economic conditions.
