Severe weather conditions in Sri Lanka's Nuwara Eliya District have claimed five lives and displaced nearly 1,100 families, though officials report conditions are beginning to improve.
The Nuwara Eliya District has been significantly impacted by recent adverse weather, resulting in five fatalities and one person reported missing, according to District Secretary Thushari Tennakoon. The bad weather has affected approximately 3,951 individuals across 1,091 families in the district, though authorities indicated on Monday that conditions have started to stabilize.
The displacement has been substantial, with 2,195 people from 523 families currently sheltering in 20 temporary relief centers established throughout the district. An additional 224 individuals have taken refuge at relatives' homes. The physical damage to property has also been notable, with authorities reporting that two houses were completely destroyed and 90 others suffered partial damage.
District officials stated that rehabilitation efforts are underway, with plans to help affected residents return to their homes once floodwaters recede. The coordinated response has included the establishment of multiple shelter facilities to accommodate those displaced by the disaster. Authorities will continue monitoring conditions and assisting affected communities during the recovery process.
