A 40-year-old foreign national has been intercepted at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while allegedly attempting to bring more than 40,000 foreign cigarettes into Sri Lanka. The passenger, described as a business employee, arrived on AirAsia flight AK47 at around 9.55 p.m. on July 24. Sri Lanka Customs officers intercepted the passenger at the Green Channel of the arrival terminal and searched two pieces of luggage. Customs officers found 201 cartons containing a total of 40,200 foreign cigarettes concealed inside the luggage. The cigarettes were valued at approximately Rs. 6.03 million. Sri Lanka Customs ordered the entire consignment to be forfeited. (Newswire)
