A Senior Assistant Secretary attached to the Parliamentary and Cabinet Affairs Division of the President’s Office has been remanded until June 30 over allegations of facilitating a forged passport for an organised crime suspect, it was reported. The suspect was produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on Saturday (27) after being arrested by the Central Crimes Investigation Bureau (CCIB), which is probing the case. Investigators allege the 41-year-old official, a resident of Kandy, helped prepare a fraudulent passport in another person’s name to enable alleged underworld figure “Karandeniya Raju” to leave the country, while serving as Deputy Controller of the Overseas Missions Division at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in 2023. The investigation came to light after “Karandeniya Raju”, the brother of organised crime figure “Karandeniya Sudda”, was deported from Dubai and taken into CCIB custody. During questioning, investigators uncovered details relating to the alleged forged travel document. The suspect was arrested by the CCIB’s Homicide and Organised Crime Investigation Division.
