Moises Henriques, a veteran of Australian international cricket, will captain Portugal as the team pursues qualification for the Twenty20 World Cup for the first time. Cricket Portugal announced the appointment on Tuesday, selecting the 39-year-old to lead a 14-member squad competing in the T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C, scheduled to take place in Finland from August 14 to 20.
Henriques brings considerable experience to the role, having represented Australia across multiple formats during his international career. He played four Test matches, 16 one-day internationals, and 24 T20 matches for his country before stepping back from Australian domestic cricket last year. Born in Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, Henriques shares a birthplace connection with Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
Portugal's campaign will present significant challenges as the team navigates Group B alongside Israel, Germany, Greece, and Czech Republic. The tournament structure requires group winners to advance to a final round, with the overall winner progressing to the European regional final. That stage will include established cricket nations Scotland, Jersey, and Denmark. Ultimately, the top two teams from the European regional final will secure places in the global qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand.
