Police have apprehended two men and two women suspected of carrying out a series of gold chain robberies across the Horana and surrounding areas over recent months.

Authorities arrested four individuals on Sunday in relation to multiple gold chain thefts reported in the Horana district. The suspects comprise two male perpetrators and two female accomplices, with the men aged 25 and 23 residing in Horana and Anguruwatota respectively, while both women are 53 years old and from the same localities.

According to police, the suspects targeted at least five separate incidents. Among the alleged crimes are robberies of gold chains and pendants from three women across the Welikala area within a 48-hour window, as well as thefts from shop workers in Horana and Munagama, and another incident in Gonapola. Investigators believe the two female suspects played a supporting role by pawning the stolen jewellery following each robbery.

During the arrests, police recovered a pair of stolen gold items, a pawn ticket, and three motorcycles purportedly used to facilitate the thefts. The Horana headquarters police continue to investigate the matter, with further details expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
