Severe drought conditions have left tens of thousands without adequate drinking water in districts across Sri Lanka's Northern, North Central, Eastern, and Uva provinces.
Four districts in Sri Lanka are grappling with acute drinking water shortages as prolonged dry weather continues to impact the country. According to the Disaster Relief Services Centre, more than 64,000 residents in Batticaloa, Ampara, Moneragala, and Ratnapura are currently without sufficient access to drinking water.
The water crisis spans multiple provinces, with the Northern, North Central, Eastern, and Uva regions all reporting significant impacts from the ongoing drought conditions. The shortage has created an urgent humanitarian concern affecting a substantial portion of the population in these areas.
Authorities have acknowledged the crisis and are taking action to address the immediate needs of affected communities. Media Spokesperson and Senior Assistant Secretary Prageeth Danansooriya indicated that relief efforts are already in motion to supply drinking water to residents in the impacted districts. However, specific details regarding the scale and timeline of these relief operations remain unclear at this stage.
