A BBC documentary has featured allegations from four women who claim actor and musician Jared Leto engaged in criminal sexual conduct with them when they were teenagers between 2002 and 2016.
Four women have come forward with allegations of criminal sexual conduct against Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto, according to a BBC investigation. The women say the alleged incidents occurred when they were teenagers, with encounters spanning from 2002 to 2016, during which Leto was in his 30s and 40s. The actor, now 54, has not responded to repeated requests for comment regarding the allegations.
The accusations include varied claims ranging from sexual assault to grooming. One woman alleges she was sexually assaulted in a motel bathroom at age 17, while another describes being threatened with sexual assault in a hotel room at 19. A third woman claims she had sexual relations with Leto at age 17 in California, which would constitute statutory rape under state law, noting that Leto dismissed discussion of the age of consent. The fourth woman states she was groomed by Leto through sexually explicit phone calls beginning when she was 16, and was later sent a non-disclosure agreement that she refused to sign.
The BBC documentary, titled "Jared Leto: Hollywood's Dark Secret," features testimonies from ten women in total, with nine sharing their stories publicly for the first time. The broadcaster says it has corroborated several accounts through conversations with friends and family members, as well as through photographs and messages. Two staff members who worked with Leto's band for extended periods also described discomfort with how the musician interacted with teenage girls, noting significant age gaps.
The allegations are not entirely new. Last year, a Los Angeles DJ named Allie Teilz posted on social media about being assaulted by Leto at age 17, prompting additional women to come forward. That same year, US media outlet Air Mail published an article featuring accusations from nine women, which Leto denied at the time. The BBC has identified more than 120 separate allegations made online regarding Leto's behaviour towards women over the years.
