The fourth Kumbal Perahera of the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera commenced this evening, featuring the ceremonial carrying of the Sacred Casket through central Kandy routes.

The fourth Kumbal Perahera of the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera began its procession through Kandy's streets this evening, marking another significant phase of the historic Buddhist festival held at Sri Dalada Maligawa.

The procession started at 6:40 p.m. and followed a predetermined route through the city's main thoroughfares. The ceremonial journey proceeded along Sri Dalada Veediya and E.L. Senanayake Veediya before turning onto Raja Veediya and returning to the sacred temple complex.

During the procession, Pulathisi Raja carried the Sacred Casket, representing a central element of the festival's religious significance. The Kumbal Perahera, which features elaborately decorated elephants and traditional pageantry, continues to draw participants and observers as part of the broader Esala Perahera celebrations that honour the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
