Maliban biscuit company brought the distinctive scent of its Ratmalana factory location to public spaces nationwide this weekend, marking its recognition as the country's most loved product brand.

For over seven decades, the aroma of freshly baked Maliban biscuits has defined Maliban Handiya, the Ratmalana junction named after the nearby factory. The scent became deeply embedded in the daily experience of residents and workers in the area, though many Sri Lankans outside the region knew of it only by reputation. This weekend, Maliban sought to change that by sharing the familiar aroma with communities across the island.

To celebrate being named the No. 1 Most Loved Product Brand in the LMD Readers' Choice Most Loved Brands 2026, the company deployed specially designed scent installations at high-traffic public locations nationwide. Using liquid evaporisers, the iconic biscuit aroma was recreated at bus stops, highway exits, cinemas, and other gathering spaces in cities including Colombo's Pettah, Makumbura, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, and Anuradhapura. Travellers at selected highway exits received specially packaged Maliban biscuits infused with the distinctive "Maliban Suwada," creating a complete sensory experience combining scent, taste, and nostalgia.

According to Positha Perera, Group Head of Corporate Communications at Maliban Group of Companies, the initiative aimed to share a collective memory. "The scent of freshly baked biscuits at Maliban Handiya has been part of our story for decades. It carries memories of home, school days, tea tables, family gatherings, and everyday moments," Perera stated. By transforming a localised brand asset into a nationwide experience, Maliban sought to reinforce its relationship with consumers built over generations through quality and consistency.
