A suspect employed at a fuel station owned by former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has been remanded by authorities investigating allegations of misusing Presidential Secretariat staff for private and political purposes.
A man identified as Deepal Sanjeewa Ratnayake, who worked at a fuel station owned by former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, has been remanded in custody until August 18 following his arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
The suspect was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya, who issued the remand order. According to CIABOC, Ratnayake is accused of aiding and abetting the misuse of individuals recruited to the Presidential Secretariat by deploying them for private and political activities, rather than their official duties.
The case also involves former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who was previously arrested in connection with the same allegations. Kariyawasam has similarly been remanded until August 18, according to recent court orders. The investigation appears to centre on the alleged diversion of government-recruited personnel for purposes outside their official mandates.
