Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya participated in the book launch event dedicated to veteran politician and former Member of Parliament Vasudeva Nanayakkara on Thursday. The occasion provided a platform for the PM to reflect on Nanayakkara's long career in Sri Lankan politics and his role in shaping the country's left-wing movement.
Addressing attendees, Amarasuriya acknowledged both areas of agreement and political disagreement with Nanayakkara while emphasizing her respect for his contributions to left-wing political discourse. She drew on her own parliamentary experience, noting that she had worked alongside him during their time in Parliament and had engaged in conversations about his extensive political background and personal experiences.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of preserving knowledge about influential political figures like Nanayakkara for the benefit of younger generations. "Future generations should know about figures like him who made an impact on Sri Lankan politics," she remarked at the event. Nanayakkara's political career has spanned multiple administrations, including a tenure as Cabinet minister under former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's government. In recent times, he has indicated support for several policy positions championed by the current NPP administration. Nanayakkara is also a relative of Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara.
