The Horana District General Hospital will be transferred from provincial administration to the Ministry of Health following a recent Gazette notification and cabinet approval.

The Horana District General Hospital, currently managed by the Western Provincial Council, is undergoing a transition to fall under the Ministry of Health and Mass Media. The transfer follows a Gazette notification and received cabinet approval on June 30, contingent upon conditions set by the Finance Ministry and Public Service Commission.

The 544-bed facility serves approximately one million residents across the Horana area and surrounding regions spanning Kalutara, Colombo, and Ratnapura districts. The hospital operates with an approved workforce of 739 staff members. According to the Ministry of Health, the transfer decision was reached after consultation with the Western Province Governor.

The Health Ministry has identified the hospital as requiring expanded infrastructure and additional human resources to strengthen its capacity as a District General Hospital capable of delivering tertiary care services. Officials view the administrative transition as an opportunity to support these development objectives and enhance healthcare delivery in the region.
