Sri Lanka's gem industry gathered in Ratnapura for a three-day international exhibition that concluded September 2, with government officials outlining plans to establish the city as a global trading hub.
The 'Gem City Ratnapura International Gem and Jewellery Exhibition 2026' concluded on September 2 after a three-day run beginning August 31, drawing participants from multiple countries including India, Pakistan, Thailand, the United States, China, Japan, and Poland. According to reporting, the event attracted stronger international participation than the previous year's edition.
Deputy Minister of Industry Chathuranga Abeysinghe stated at the closing ceremony that the increased attendance signals recovery within Sri Lanka's gem sector. He outlined government ambitions to develop Ratnapura into a major international gem trading hub, citing an estimated US$3 billion potential for the industry. The strategy encompasses strengthening operations across mining, value addition, manufacturing, and export stages.
The Deputy Minister identified several priority initiatives to support this expansion, including enhanced traceability systems and measures to build international confidence in Sri Lankan gems, streamlined import-export procedures, introduction of new regulations and facilities, youth skills development, and expanded research capabilities. Officials credited the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Traders and Miners Association, and other stakeholders for contributing to the exhibition's organisation.
