Sri Lanka's Cabinet has approved merging the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute into the National Gem and Jewellery Authority to streamline operations and eliminate resource duplication.

The Cabinet of Ministers has endorsed a restructuring plan that will integrate the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute as a division within the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. The decision aims to consolidate two separate institutions that have operated since the 1990s but lacked coordinated mechanisms.

Both organisations have played roles in advancing Sri Lanka's gem and jewellery sector. The National Gem and Jewellery Authority was established under Act No. 50 of 1993, while the Research and Training Institute began operations two years later in 1995. However, officials identified inefficiencies resulting from their separate operations, including duplicate resource allocation and conflicting policy directions.

The Cabinet decision, formally approved on March 17, 2025, followed a review conducted by a committee led by the Secretary to the Prime Minister. Subsequently, the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development established another committee to develop specific structural reform recommendations. The Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development presented the resulting proposal to Cabinet, which approved the merger and authorised necessary legal amendments aligned with the original 1993 legislation governing the authority.

The integration is expected to create a more efficient institutional framework for supporting industry research and training activities while reducing operational redundancies.
