Generation Z has emerged as the most active users of artificial intelligence across the Asia Pacific region, according to research released by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. Half of surveyed Gen Z respondents reported using AI daily or nearly daily, significantly outpacing other demographic groups. The primary applications include information retrieval (57%), academic study (54%), and idea generation (50%).

Beyond functional use, the research highlights a notable shift in how younger users relate to AI technology. Nearly one-third of Gen Z respondents in the region (32%) now interact with AI systems as they would with friends, seeking emotional support and companionship. This pattern is particularly pronounced in Vietnam (42%), Indonesia (36%), and India (37%), where respondents also report using AI to discuss personal matters they would not share with others. Kaspersky researchers note that while AI's conversational nature appeals to Gen Z's digital habits, users may be unaware that such interactions lack the confidentiality and reliability of human relationships.

Despite their comfort with AI, Gen Z users display inconsistent security practices. While 45% of respondents report consistently applying protective measures when using AI services, over half (51%) admit to implementing safeguards only occasionally. Malaysia recorded the lowest adherence to safety practices, with 54% of respondents taking precautions sporadically. Security experts emphasize that protective habits—such as verifying information from multiple sources and avoiding disclosure of sensitive data—are critical as AI becomes increasingly integrated into education, personal decision-making, and communication.

Kaspersky's research, conducted in March 2026 among 7,200 respondents across 18 countries, underscores the need for developing cybersecurity literacy alongside AI skills. The company has launched educational initiatives including a cybersecurity game called "Case 404" designed to teach Gen Z about digital threats while maintaining engagement with technology they increasingly rely upon.
