Sri Lanka's agricultural sector is experiencing robust global demand, with exports rising by 20 percent in the previous year, according to Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe from the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship. The growth reflects strengthening international appetite for the country's farm products across multiple categories.
Coconut-based products dominate the export portfolio, representing 42 percent of total agricultural exports. Fruit and vegetable products follow with 21 percent and 20 percent respectively. The Deputy Minister noted that this diversified export base demonstrates the sector's resilience and market appeal across different product lines.
Looking ahead, the government anticipates increased investment flowing into agriculture in coming years. Officials have signaled plans to prioritize organic product development as a strategy to further enhance export competitiveness. The administration views this sector expansion as an opportunity to create growth and strengthen Sri Lanka's position in international agricultural markets.
