Sri Lanka's Government Medical Officers' Association and Government Dental Surgeons' Association have announced joint opposition to the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment, citing concerns over judicial retirement provisions.
The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) and the Government Dental Surgeons' Association (GDSA) have declared their intention to collectively oppose the proposed 22nd Amendment to Sri Lanka's Constitution. The two organizations plan to coordinate their efforts with other professional bodies, including the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), to mount a unified challenge to the amendment.
The proposed amendment has attracted criticism from multiple professional and civil society organizations, with particular concern focused on clauses that would extend the mandatory retirement age for judges serving on the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Medical and dental professionals have viewed these provisions as problematic, prompting their coordinated stance.
According to the GMOA and GDSA, the coalition of professional organizations intends to determine and execute additional strategic actions against the constitutional amendment in the coming period. The involvement of the legal profession through the Bar Association signals broader concerns about judicial independence and governance implications within professional circles.
