The Cabinet has approved a three-month extension of the monthly temporary housing rental allowance provided to families who lost their homes due to landslides and floods caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The extension was announced in Budget Circular No. 08/2025 (iv), signed by Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma and issued to ministry secretaries, provincial chief secretaries, heads of departments, and district and divisional secretaries. Under the revised “Program for Empowering those Affected by the Disaster”, eligible homeowners who have lost their residences and do not have alternative accommodation will continue to receive a monthly rental allowance of Rs. 25,000 while constructing a new home. The maximum duration of the allowance has been increased from six months to nine months. The Treasury said all other conditions set out in the original Budget Circular dated Dec. 5, 2025, remain unchanged. (Newswire)
