Sri Lankan authorities have convened a progress review meeting to assess existing measures for protecting marine and coastal resources, with focus on environmental safeguards and security improvements at fishing facilities.

Officials from multiple government ministries gathered at the Ministry of Environment to evaluate the country's approach to marine and coastal resource management. The meeting was jointly led by Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendi, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, and Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd). Aruna Jayasekara.

The review examined current initiatives aimed at protecting coastal resources and preventing environmental degradation across Sri Lanka's maritime zones. Participants assessed security arrangements at fishing harbours and island facilities, identifying potential vulnerabilities that require attention.

The oversight committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, includes representation from the Ministries of Defence, Environment, Fisheries, and Tourism, as well as officials from government and non-governmental organisations. During discussions, participants worked toward developing actionable recommendations that would strengthen both security protocols and environmental protection standards at fishing facilities and coastal installations.
