Sri Lanka's Housing Ministry has announced plans to allocate funds from the 2027 Budget to address approximately 5,000 incomplete housing projects across the country, with a special committee now reviewing viable projects for completion.

The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply has begun work on a comprehensive strategy to complete housing projects left unfinished across Sri Lanka. Minister Susil Ranasinghe informed Parliament's Advisory Committee that the 2027 Budget will include provisions to address this backlog, which he attributed largely to incomplete disbursement of loans and foreign aid funds under previous administrations.

A five-member panel, co-chaired by two former Ministry Secretaries, has been tasked with evaluating the approximately 5,000 stalled projects nationwide. The committee is currently gathering data to identify which projects are in usable condition and determining the most viable approach for their completion. Final decisions on how to proceed will be made following the panel's formal recommendations.

The Ministry has indicated that families requiring assistance to complete partially constructed homes will receive support starting next year, with around 2,000 households expected to benefit from this initiative. Parliamentarians raised specific housing and water supply concerns affecting their constituencies during the meeting, prompting the Ministry to commit to organizing a dedicated stakeholder consultation to address broader housing challenges, particularly regarding low-income housing projects in the Colombo District.

The government's move reflects an effort to address a longstanding infrastructure challenge and unlock resources for vulnerable families awaiting housing completion.
